Description
Swimmers enjoy the ocean near the extinct volcano called Diamond Head on Hawaiian Island of Oahu. When climbing to the top of the old volcano, you will pass this spectacular view of the Diamond Head Lighthouse. Located on the steep coastal cliff, the original lighthouse was built in 1899 and still has the original Fresnel lighthouse lens which is still in use today. Built of reinforced concrete, the completely automated 55-foot lighthouse stands 147 feet above sea level and projects its light 18 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. In case of a power outage, the lighthouse has a back-up battery to keep it operating. The light keeper quarters were renovated and now serve as the residence of the 14th Coast Guard District Commander.
The Fresnel lens atop the lighthouse has the intensity of 60,000 candlepower sending a red beam warning ships away from the reefs on Waikiki Beach which, even to a flat lander like me, sounds like an excellent idea!
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Your finished photograph will not contain the Fine Art America watermark.
