Description
Rugged hills with layers of red and brown rock dominate the landscape, with patches of green vegetation growing among the rocky terrain. The clear blue sky and scattered clouds add depth to the dramatic scene...
This dinosaur fossil is near the western Colorado town of Fruita. It is located in a quarry on Dinosaur Hill where a 70 foot long Apatosaurus was excavated by Elmer Riggs and his crew in 1901. Riggs was an Assistant Curator of Paleontology at the Field museum in Chicago.
Apatosaurus was a large, long-necked, quadrupedal animal with a long, whip-like tail with forelimbs slightly shorter than its hind limbs. Most size estimates are based on existing specimens reaching 69–75 feet in length and 18.1–24.7 tons in body mass.
Inquiring minds want to know… An Apatosaurus is different from a Brontosaurus in that the Apatosaurus was heavier and longer than the Brontosaurus, while the Brontosaurs had a longer and more slender neck. (Ask anybody on the street, they’ll tell you the Brontosaurs was much more svelte than the Apatosaurus…)
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition.
