The Astoria - Megler Bridge is the longest continuous steel cantilever truss bridge in North America. It spans the Columbia River between Astoria, Oregon and Point Ellice near Megler, Washington. Located 14 miles from the mouth of the river, the bridge is 4.1 miles long and was the last completed segment of U.S. Route 101 between Olympia, Washington, and Los Angeles, California.
Ferry service between Astoria and the Washington side of the Columbia River began in 1926. Later, the Oregon Department of Transportation purchased the ferry service in 1946. The ferry did not operate during inclement weather and the half-hour travel time caused traffic delays. In order to allow faster and more reliable crossings near the mouth of the river, the Astoria - Megler bridge was planned. Photography is all about using light to capture the emotion and beauty of a fleeting moment. For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques. My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. This is so beautiful Jon as I have crossed that bridge many, many times! After I left Colorado, I ended up in Ilwaco, WA just about 18 Miles north of the bridge...Had a wonderful 5 months there right on the marina and I could not have asked for better weather...and it has not been the same since I left....was there for 3 months last winter and had to find the right time to even leave as the winter was such a horrible one; far different from the year before... I love this image my friend and it does bring back some ice memories, as I had to cross every time I went out for groceries....nothing there in Ilwaco so would cross the bridge into Oregon and go shopping in Warrenton.... I know, way too much info.,.. LOL geat shot of this beautiful bridge my friend!!! :-))
