Description
The Atlas Theater, also known as the Atlas Building, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, dates from 1887 and was built out as a theater in 1908. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is located in what has historically been the heart of Cheyenne's downtown business district, where it is still surrounded by commercial activity.
From 1887 to 1908 the upper floors of the three-story building were used for professional offices and the ground floor was a confectionery shop. The Capitol Avenue Theater, built in 1905 was probably more impressive than the Atlas. Nevertheless, at that time there apparently was room in Cheyenne for another facility, one which could provide low-cost amusement, and thus the Atlas was built.
In 1907, architect William Dubois was hired to convert the first floor into a theater. The next year, the Atlas Theater opened and continued to operate until 1929 when it closed for a couple of months and then reopened as the Strand. By the mid 1950’s, the building sat abandoned. In 1961 the Pink Pony nightclub opened, remaining open for only two short years.
The Atlas again sat idle until in 1966, when the Cheyenne Little Theater Players began to use the Atlas for live theater productions. In 1971, the theater company purchased the Atlas, and two years later it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Though little is known about them, the historic theater is said to be home to two active ghosts.
The Atlas is currently (2020) being refurbished and will continue to amaze all who see it.
