Description
The Consolidated B-24 Liberator is an American four-engine heavy bomber used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and other allied air forces during World War II. Of the 19,256 aircraft built, 13 complete examples survive today, two of which are airworthy. Eight of the thirteen aircraft reside in the United States.
One of those thirteen was built at Consolidated Fort Worth as B-24J and delivered to USAF October 1944. It was assigned to RAF in India and abandoned in Khanpur following WW2. As one of 36 B-24s restored by Indian Air Force, it was used until 1968. The airplane was abandoned in India following service. In 1982, it was purchased by Doug Arnold and sent to England and stored at Blackbushe until 1986. Later it was purchased by the Collings Foundation and rebuilt by Tom Reilly Vintage Aircraft in Kissimmee, Florida, using livery of 42-78444 "All American." It was first flown 8 August 1989 and repainted as 44-40973 "The Dragon and His Tail" in 1998. In 2005 the old warbird was repainted as 42-52534 "Witchcraft." It is now along with 40-2366, one of only two airworthy B-24s.
