Description
Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite the advent of later, more advanced aircraft, including the canceled Mach 3 B-70 Valkyrie, the variable-geometry B-1 Lancer, and the stealth B-2 Spirit. The B-52 completed sixty years of continuous service with its original operator in 2015. After being upgraded between 2013 and 2015, it is expected to serve into the 2050s.
Few other combat aircraft have as lengthy a service career as the B-52 Stratofortress. Having experienced conflicts ranging from the Cold War in the early 1950s to the Gulf War 40 years later, the versatility of the B-52 has marked its place in military aviation history. Originally manufactured in 1955, our RB-52B model was delivered to the Lowry Technical Training Center at Lowry Air Force Base to be used as a trainer, and in 1994 was transferred to Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver, Colorado.
Some digital effects were applied to this original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Ordered images will not contain the FAA watermark.
