Description
This photograph of Balanced Rock is in Colorado National Monument on the western side of the continental divide near the town of Fruita.
Trails in the monument were originally established by John Otto, the first park custodian and advocate for membership in the National Park System. Otto, a resident of Grand Junction, Colorado became familiar with the surrounding area thought it beautiful enough to become a national park. However, it wasn't until 1911 that it was designated a National Monument instead and Otto hired as its first custodian for the princely sum of $1.00 per month.
Otto's accomplishments included carving a steep stairway up to the top of Independence Monument, the largest feature in the park. He was often called a Trail Builder or "Hermit" in newspaper stories as he traveled the area with his two burros, Foxie and Cookie, carrying camping equipment and provisions.
