Artist's Description

Old bear trap hanging on a post at Hermits Rest near the Grand Canyon. Hermits Rest is a structure built in 1914 at the western end of Hermit Road at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The Hermit Trail, a hiking trail that extends to the Colorado River, begins about a quarter mile beyond the shuttle bus stop at Hermit's Rest. The area represents the western terminus of the Rim Trail and was named for Louis Boucher. Around 1891, Boucher - a Canadian-born prospector - staked claims below present-day Hermits Rest. With help, Boucher carved the aforementioned trail into the canyon, for years lived alone at nearby Dripping Springs. The main structure currently standing at Hermits Rest was designed by architect Mary Colter. Hermits Rest is the westernmost point on the canyon's south rim that is accessible by paved road. For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques. My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994.
