Description
As the sun sets nearer and near to the horizon, light is scattered more and more as it enters the Earth's atmosphere. The more of the atmosphere the light travels through, the more the scattering. Shorter wavelength blue light is scattered out first, followed finally by the red wavelengths. Remember the mnemonic, ROY G BIV? It stands for the colors of the visible spectrum or rainbow of colors - from shortest to longest wavelengths. Red is on the long end and blue on the short of the spectrum.
