Santa Fe, New Mexico, was reinvented to attract modernists and cultural tourists in the 1920's and 30's. Its artistic legacy is undimmed, with new artists inspired by its light and landscape
By the late 1910s, Taos, New Mexico, had become an important outpost of American art. Scores of east coast painters travelled there each summer, and their touring exhibitions opened the nation's eyes to the indigenous cultures and landscape of the south-west. But as Taos grew in fame and popularity, Santa Fe, the nearby state capital, withered.
The city's elders watched in dismay as charabancs of visitors, their pockets bulging with Yankee dollars, rattled through the dusty streets on their way north to Taos. Something had to be done. The city needed an exotic allure as powerful as Taos's for the Anglo foreigner .
They decided to impose a building code: all new structures should be designed in the Pueblo revival style modelled on the local Indian pueblos' use of wood beams and sun-bake...
Photography is all about using light to capture the emotion and beauty of a fleeting moment. For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques. My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994. Part of the studio's early success came from creating outdoor portraiture using controlled lighting...

I'm from the Southwest - raised in Albuquerque - so the lines and textures of this beautiful adobe building spoke to me instantly. Tones are superb and the snow accents the rounded shapes beautifully. My pick for DFM&N for October 22.
