Description
Here in northern Colorado, we can usually expect some kind of snowfall around or before Halloween. Yesterday's snow was the second the occurred this month and right on time as usual. Halloween is actually one of the fourth Cross-Quarter Days that fall between an equinox and a solstice. It actually falls between November 5th and the 8th,but Halloween is celebrated on the last day of October. Other Cross-Quarter holidays that happen this time of year include Samhain and the Feast of All Saints.
Samhain (Celtic - Sow'in) refers to the Harvest Festival God and is sometimes confused with Halloween. All modern day American Halloween celebrations have Celtic roots. The Festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is generally regarded as 'The Celtic New Year'. The same word was used for a month in the ancient Celtic calendar, in particular the first three nights of this month, with the festival marking the end of the summer season and the end of the harvest.
A modernized version of this festival continues today in some of the traditions of the Catholic All Souls' Day, the secular Halloween, and in folk practices of Samhain itself in the Celtic Nations and the Irish and Scottish diaspora.
