Artist's Description

The Spanish Peaks are a pair of prominent mountains located in southwestern Huerfano County, Colorado. The Ute Indians called them Huajatolla meaning "breasts of the Earth".

The two peaks, West Spanish Peak reaching 13,626 feet and East Spanish Peak at 12,683 feet, are east of the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. These mountains can be seen as far north as Colorado Springs, and as far west as Alamosa, Colorado and south to Raton, New Mexico, and points east of Trinidad, Colorado.

The Spanish Peaks were formed by two separate shallow igneous intrusions during the Late-Oligocene epoch of the Paleogene Period. West Spanish Peak is an older mountain composed of quartz syenite while the younger East Spanish Peak is composed of granite and granodiorite porphyry.

The Spanish Peaks were designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976 as one of the best known examples of igneous dikes and were an important landmark on the Santa Fe Trail.

My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994. Part of the studio's early success came from creating outdoor portraiture using controlled lighting...
