Description
This Catholic Church found near the Purgatoire River was an important component of a small Hispanic community living in the Picket Wire Canyon lands from the late 1870's through 1890's. In 1889, Damacio Lopez, the original owner, sold his land to Reverend Bishop Mattz of the Denver diocese of Catholic Church for $1. The Catholic Church donated the .11 acre parcel to the US Forest Service in 2007.
Churches were important architectural elements in Hispanic communities and were symbolic of the social values of the inhabitants. The Lopez donation of land to the church reflects his importance in the community. The actual construction date of the church is unknown, but it was likely built in the late nineteenth century. Its stone masonry and adobe construction is representative of the mix of Hispanic and Euro-American influenced architecture in the region.
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Ordered images will not contain the FAA watermark.
