Artist's Description

Elk or wapiti is one of the largest species within the deer family in the world roaming through vast areas, from very high elevations to the lowlands. During winter when snow drifts deep in the mountains, these grazing animals have no choice but to migrate downward to where they can get food. When this happens, elk begin gathering together in large herds, remaining in those groups throughout the winter.

This elk (in velvet) was found munching on some roadside plants along Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. I found him somewhere between 10,000 and 11,000 feet MSL. It was too hot down below for him I guess...

For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques. My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994.
