Description
Along these shores walked William Clark traveling with an exploration party from Fort Clatsop in 1806. The forest, some 200 years ago, included mostly trees less than 100 years old. Some of those trees are now nearing 300 years old.
"... I observed large canoes of the neatest kind on the ground some of which appeared nearly decayed others quit sound... the kilamax secure the dead bodies in an oblong box of plank which is placed in an open canoe resting on the ground..." William Clark's journal, January 8, 1806.
The Clatsop Loop Trail on the Oregon coast begins with a thick layer of debris from a landslide that came down Indian Creek following a major earthquake and fire about 1700.
This image was made near Chapman Point in Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach, Oregon.
