Description
A quartet of Colorful Colorado wonders! The Great Sand Dunes lie on the far side of Medano Creek and the mighty Sangre de Cristo Mountain range looms against a beautiful blue Colorado sky.
Sand is constantly being formed as rivers and streams roll and tumble rocks and gravel. Much of the sand in the Great Sand Dunes was eroded from the San Juan Mountains and carried by streams into the San Luis Valley. Some sand originated in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that you see in the background.
The Dunes developed when erosion took place in these mountains, streams brought sand to the valley to form deposits in the flood plain, and surface winds were guided to Music, Medano, and Mosca passes by a bend in the Sangre de Cristos creating a pocket to deposit sand.
The main dune field is not growing because it lacks new sand. Vegetation in the surrounding area has stabilized the sand sheet. The dunes in near Medano Creek however, can still grow because the creek brings sand back to the area.
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Ordered images will not contain the FAA watermark
