Description
The Sun Spiral is an ancient symbol representing the sun. It occurs in many cultures, with the oldest find being engraved on a 24,000 years old mammoth tooth. It was a popular symbol in Scandinavia during the Bronze Age and the Viking Age, symbolizing vitality and life.
The Picture Rocks Sun Dagger is a spiral petroglyph on a hillside northwest of Tucson that shows sun dagger events at both the summer solstice and the equinoxes.
The Hohokam were prehistoric North American Indians who lived approximately from 200 to 1400 CE in the semiarid region of present-day central and southern Arizona, largely along the Gila and Salt rivers. The term Hohokam is said to be Pima for “those who have vanished.”
