Description
When I was somewhat younger, each summer morning when the Kansas wheat harvest was going full steam, I would awaken to the sound of the local blacksmith pounding something on his shop anvil. Usually, it was plowshares or something else that needed sharpening or fixing. We didn't have any horses but I'm sure he knew his way around their feet as well. Horseshoeing, fixing broken pieces of machinery, making door pulls and handles were all part of everyday life in rural areas. This was no different from early fur trading days at Fort Lupton in Colorado.
In 1988, the South Platte Valley Historical Society was formed and talk of rebuilding Fort Lancaster/Lupton began. It wasn't until 2004 that the project officially took off when members started reconstructing Fort Lancaster, as it was known in its original period of operation, 1836-1844, was completed and dedicated in 2011.
The South Platte Valley Historical Society has a mission to preserve the history of the South Platte Valley area and is creating a one-hundred acre history park on the north side Fort Lupton, Colorado with facilities dedicated to education and historic interpretation including annual rendezvous at nearby Fort Lancaster/Lupton. The fort, of course, incorporates a blacksmith shop with all its usual accouterments.
Some digital effects were applied to this original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Ordered images will not contain the FAA watermark. Partial proceeds from the sale of this image will be donated to the South Platte Valley Historical Society.
