Description
Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Prickles often occur all over the plant - on surfaces such as those of the stem and flat parts of leaves and are an adaptation that protects the plant against herbivorous animals, discouraging them from feeding on the plant.
Bright purple thistle blossoms attract butterflies and bumblebees to the garden in spring and summer and provide a favorite food of birds in summer and fall. Thistles thrive in harsh, dry conditions, but not all thistles are considered beneficial. Some thistles are invasive weeds that can crowd out native plants.
Some thistles, like the globe artichoke are varieties of a species cultivated as a food. The edible portion of this plant consists of the flower buds before the flowers come into bloom.
The Musk Thistle grows from sea level to an elevation of about 8,200 feet and is found in neutral to acidic soils. It typically grows in meadows and grasslands, in heavily grazed land in areas such as pastures, and on open disturbed soil such as roadsides and building sites. The thistle spreads rapidly in areas subjected to frequent natural disturbance events such as landslides and flooding, but does not grow well in excessively wet, dry, or shady conditions.
Carduus nutans, with the common names Musk thistle, Nodding thistle, and Nodding plumeless thistle, is a biennial herb in the Asteraceae-sunflower family. It is native to regions of Europe and Asia. - Wikki
