I've never been to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and just recently have returned from my first visit to the south rim. It would probably be fun to see the bottom, but walking down and back up won't work for me. That leaves the mules - we would probably get a long fine since I'm stubborn too...
The National Park Service warns that there are no easy trails into or out of the Grand Canyon. They state that "the Bright Angel Trail begins just west of Bright Angel Lodge and offers day hikes that range in distance up to 12 miles (round trip). Some shade. Seasonal water subject to pipeline breaks. Check at the Visitor Center or Backcountry Information Center for water status. Upper portion of the trail may be extremely icy in winter or early spring." Believe I'll pass...
The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River. It is contained within and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, and the Havasupai Tribe. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
