Description
Wahkeena Falls is a 242 foot waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge in the state of Oregon. The waterfall is unlike nearby Multnomah Falls in that the water does not directly plunge to the ground. The falls have a more subtle cascading flow and have been featured in numerous travel guides and in photography books.
This waterfall is one of the more popular destinations in the Columbia River gorge because it has a beauty all their own. It's not a huge, single fall like Multnomah or Latourell and there's no lodge or fancy freeway exit to draw people from distance places. Wahkeena Creek goes this way and that, now a plunge, now a horsetail, now a cascade. It's a beautiful combination of many things.
Wahkeena Falls can be found along the Historic Columbia River Highway, about 13 miles east of Troutdale, Oregon. A short hike from the parking lot at the base leads to the stone bridge that crosses the main part of the falls. That trail continues on east to the well known Multnomah Falls and is visible directly from the Historic Columbia River Highway. The spelling of this name is dubious because the word is an English transliteration of a Native American phrase meaning most beautiful.
