Description
In 1883, the Fort Collins Water Works was the first public works project in the area. The Water Works is located along the foothills west of Fort Collins, Colorado where the historic Cherokee Trail and Overland Stage route run through the property. Just jump on the Overland Trail at LaPorte and head south and you'll drive right by it.
The facility was built in 1882-1883 to provide the growing town of Fort Collins with an adequate supply of water for fighting the building fires that plagued the early town. The water supply to homes also was expected to reduce waterborne illnesses. Water delivery continued until 1905 when the new water filter plant opened in the Poudre Canyon. Designated as a State and Local historical landmark, the property is currently being transformed into a Water Interpretive Center. Guided tours of the site allow visitors to learn about the mechanics of water delivery.
The Water Works includes 26 acres, 4 buildings and 2 historic irrigation ditches. A 100-year-old orchard features seven early varieties of apple trees. One of the largest cottonwood trees in Larimer County is located on the Water Works ground. The Poudre Landmarks Foundation and the Friends of the Water Works administers the ongoing preservation work at the water works property. It is open as an interpretive center for water development and use in the Fort Collins area and is open for free tours the 2nd Saturday of May thru October from 10am to 3pm.
The State Historical Fund, a part of the Colorado Historical Society, provided several grants to complete planning, stabilization, and archaeological investigations at the property.
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Ordered images will not contain the Fine Art America watermark.
