Description
This is NOT a 'Harvest Moon'. Letscee now, today is September 20, 2013 and we had a 'full' moon a couple of night's ago and all the TV broadcasters were going nutso calling it the 'Harvest Moon', which it wasn't. Oh well, it was the 'full' moon of September, which most folks connect to the 'Harvest Moon' because the 'full' moon rises as the Sun sets and if at perigee or the closest approach to the Earth brightly shines in the sky which would allow people to continue to work in the fields I guess.
However, the astronomical definition of the true 'Harvest Moon' as I understand it refers to the first 'full' moon that occurs AFTER the Autumn Equinox, which by the way, happens this year on Sunday, September 22nd at 2:44 PM Mountain Standard Time.
This image of the Waxing Gibbous phase was made last January from the Hawaiian island of Oahu through the clouds. The oil processes and brush strokes were made after the photograph was made. Copyright 2013 Jon Burch Photography
