Description
The winter solstice arrived in the northern hemisphere as the Sun reached it's southernmost setting point on the horizon on December 21st, The least amount of daylight and the arrival of the Sun above the Tropic of Capricorn 23.5 degrees south of the equator marked it's most southern declination from the equator. From this day on, until the summer solstice in June, days will slowly get longer and the Sun will be seen above the horizon further and further north as the days warm.
This HDR image was made just south of Loveland, Colorado as the Sun was about to go below the horizon on the first day of northern hemisphere winter.

Love this image Jon! voted!
Jon Burch Photography replied:
Thank you Tom! BTW, thanks for the suggestions when I was in Sedona a couple of weeks ago. I think I'll try to hit the crossing again in the fall before the trees lose their leaves. Had a flat tire before we left town, but otherwise no problems. Thanks again! See you next trip.

Thank you very much Inge! It was pretty 'cool' on the ground making the sundown exposures too...!
