"Morning Pancakes" was made several years ago of the autumn foliage on the west side of Pikes Peak near Divide, Colorado with a 4x5 Graflex view camera using Ektachrome ISO 100 transparency film. The exposure was made at 1/100 of a second with the camera aperture set for f/16. The final processed image was then digitized for uploading. The upper area on the far hillside was called "The Pancakes" by the owners of the property from whose garage rooftop the image was made.
Pikes Peak is a mountain in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains within Pike National Forest, 10 miles west of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in El Paso County. Originally called "El Capit'n" by Spanish settlers, the mountain was renamed Pike's Peak after explorer Zebulon Pike Jr. led an expedition to the southern Colorado area in 1806.
At 14,115 feet the mountain is one of Colorado's 54 fourteeners rising more than 14,000 feet above mean sea level, and 8,400 feet above the city of Colorado Springs....
Photography is all about using light to capture the emotion and beauty of a fleeting moment. For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques. My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994. Part of the studio's early success came from creating outdoor portraiture using controlled lighting...
