My youngest son wanted to take me for an airplane ride and there was a hole in the clouds above the local airport so up we went in one of Van's RV-9's. Oregon CAVU (Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited) isn't quite what we have in Colorado but once we crawled up above the cloud deck a marvelous sight was waiting. Mt. Hood above the clouds, what a sight to see! It's one of Oregon's highest mountains.
But how high is this mountain called Hood? Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe, is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon. It was formed by a subduction zone and rests in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located about 50 miles east-southeast of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence.
