Artist's Description
THIS is why Colorado is having all those wildfires! The mountain pine beetle has killed large numbers of the lodge pole pine trees in the northern mountains of Colorado. The more recent outbreak of another bark beetle pest, the spruce beetle, is threatening higher-elevation forests of Engelmann spruce. Chemical prevention is effective but too costly for large-scale use. Dead trees increase the incidence of wildfires, and may contribute to climate change as they decay.
Mountain pine beetles infest the lodge pole pine, which makes up 8% of Colorado's 22 million acres of forests. These trees are found at elevations between 6,000 to 11,000 feet. A previous notable outbreak occurred in Colorado in the 1970’s but was significantly less detrimental than the current infestation. Of the 1,760,000 acres of lodge pole pine, about 70% have been damaged. High temperatures have allowed beetle infestations at higher elevations.

About Jon Burch Photography

My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994. Part of the studio's early success came from creating outdoor portraiture using controlled lighting...
