Woke up to some fresh snow on Longs Peak and Mt. Meeker. It's May 25th, Memorial Day and the northern mountains got hit again last night. Well, what did you expect? It's Colorful Colorado!
The 14,259 foot mountain in northern Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park has served as a navigational aid for thousands of years. Prehistoric hunters oriented their travels by it and the Ute Indians saw Longs Peak as a sacred place and guiding landmark. French speaking fur trappers called Longs Peak and adjacent Mt. Meeker "Les Deux Oreilles," or the Two Ears.
After Major Stephen H. Long led a U.S. Army topographic expedition to this region in 1820, the peak was named for him. As Major Long and his party of 22 explorers neared the Rocky Mountains, he wrote, "a high Peake was plainly to be distinguished towering above all the others as far as sight extended." Modern travelers still use this famous landmark to orient themselves when needed...

Photography is all about using light to capture the emotion and beauty of a fleeting moment. For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques. My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994.
