Pawnee Buttes are two prominent buttes located within the Pawnee National Grassland in Weld County, of northeastern Colorado. Rising approximately 300 feet above the surrounding plains, the buttes are erosional remnants left standing in isolation as the surrounding High Plains surface has gradually worn away. The lower portions of the buttes are composed of relatively soft, clay-rich sedimentary rock called the Brule formation. The Brule formation is protected by an overlying layer of sandstone and conglomerate sediments called the Arikaree formation, which are more resistant to weathering.
In James Michener's book "Centennial", Pawnee Buttes were referred to as 'Rattlesnake Buttes'. Today, the buttes are surrounded by a nuclear ICBM missile silo field maintained by personnel from the 90th Missile Wing stationed at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
This image of Pawnee Buttes was made in eastern Colorado on the Pawnee National Grasslands on a warm August evening.

I owned and operated a professional studio in central Kansas for 20 years and moved to Colorado in 1994. Part of the studio's early success came from creating outdoor portraiture using controlled lighting...
