Description
Saints John is a former silver-mining town in Summit County, Colorado about a mile from the town of Montezuma, Saints John was the site of one of the first silver discoveries in Colorado.
Prospector John Cullom discovered the Saints John Lode in 1861. Many other strikes followed with one rumored to have been found by a man who sat down to take a nap. When he got up, he used a rock to help steady himself and the rock broke off to reveal rich ore.
In 1867, Collom sold out to the Boston Silver Mining Company, which built an ore mill, next to which grew the town, originally called Coleyville. In the 1870 census, the town name had changed to Saints John, which had a population of 71, which made it the largest town in Summit County. However, when the silver played out, the town closed down. The town had no saloons, so why stay?
This original photograph was made in the late 1960's with a medium format camera. The negative was immediately lost by the careless photographer and the only existing print, extremely faded, was recently re-photographed to make this image. Some digital effects were applied after the original photograph was made.
