Conventional wisdom for the southwest used to be that one could find two different kinds of things there. Things that bite you and things that stick you. Certainly not true in this part of Arizona!
This view is looking toward recognizable red rock formation close to the town of Sedona at the base of the Crimson Cliffs and Schnebly Hill Road. The distinguished landmark is Snoopy Rock, a likeness to Snoopy the dog from the Peanuts cartoons. From Snoopy Rock are sweeping views of Sedona and its surrounding geologic formations.
The red rocks of Sedona show layers of time in the rock strata. Defining the boundary between the Colorado Plateau to the north, the Basin and Range to the south and the base of the Mogollon Rim, Courthouse Butte, Bell Rock and the other red rocks form an escarpment that runs east-west through the middle of Arizona. For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques.
