Description
Annular eclipse shadows as seen Texas. Cell phone image of the shadows as made by tree leaves on a local driveway. I didn't want to take a chance of frying the sensors in my phone/camera/whatever...
An annular eclipse occurs only if the New Moon is at Apogee, its most distant position in its orbit from the Earth. When this happens, the Moon's shadow is not long enough to reach Earth and if you are directly in the Moon’s umbra, the darkest part of its shadow, you will see an 'annulus' or ring around the Moon where the Sun's limb is visible.
At that distance, the diameter of the Moon is smaller than the diameter of the Sun and an 'annulus' or ring around the Moon can be seen highlighting the limb of the Sun.
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition.
