Description
The Great Horned Owl is a common large eared owl and is twice the size of aggressive crows that often harass it. Color pattern is similar to the smaller and slimmer Long-eared Owl, but the ear tufts on the Great Horned Owl are larger and farther apart. The Owl’s belly is finely barred horizontally in contrast to the more boldly streaked lengthwise bars on a Long-eared Owl.
Owls belong to order Strigiformes and family Tytonidae. They are large headed, short-necked birds of prey and are mostly nocturnal and best seen and more frequently heard at dusk. The large eyes are fixed in their sockets, so the entire head moves as owls shift their gaze. The flat, round, or heart-shaped facial disk conceals the large external ear flaps. All owls have erect ear tufts and fly silently, hunting for rodents and other small mammals. Females are like males, but larger. Most small owls nest in cavities in trees and lay round eggs. The call of a Great Horned Owl is typically four to seven low hoots.
