Description
Sixty-five million years ago, an interior seaway covered much of North America. During what is now called the Cretaceous period, the land of the Western United States was submerged by this large body of water and ancient beaches formed at places where the sea washed up onto the surrounding shore. Near the mouth of the Big Thompson Canyon in northern Colorado, one can see an example of such a beach in the Lyons sandstone west of Loveland. The deposit lies on the north side of Highway 34 directly across from the spill way in the Big Thompson River. Continue west a little further and you will enter the Narrows of the Big Thompson Canyon leading you to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.
