Description
RING, RING, ring - two longs and a short. The old wooden encased wall telephone on the wall would sound off. The crank on the side used to call someone else was being used by someone else on their phone causing ours to ring. Wonder who that could be? Picking up the metal receiver from the opposite side, listening patiently for others to also pick up and counting the clicks on the line when they did. OK, now we're all here, go ahead and speak, we're all ready now. That was the party line sequence in the small Kansas town where I was. Once in a while, I even got to go down to the small home that housed the telephone switchboard, now in a museum near Abilene, to see the wires, connectors, switches and of course, Elfie the girl who ran it all.
Wasn't the NSA, but the conversations weren't private then either...
