Description
The Purgatoire River is a river in southeastern Colorado on the Comanche National Grasslands. According to legend, a group of Spanish treasure seeking soldiers died in the canyons without benefit of clergy. Consequently, in the sixteenth century the river was named "El Rio de Las Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio" or the "River of Souls Lost in Purgatory." Later French trappers shortened the name to the Purgatoire. Early Anglo travelers on the Santa Fe Trail could not pronounce Purgatoire and further corrupted the name to Picket Wire.
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Ordered images will not contain the Fine Art America watermark.
