Description
I've photographed this huge cirque near the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park many times but never have been totally happy with the results. I've used 40 mm Hasselblad lenses and finally a 20mm Nikon lens on a 35 mm camera which is what you see here. Still there is more of the cirque to be seen.
A cirque is a huge bowl-shaped depression carved by glacial activity over eons of time and this one is truly magnificent. I was thinking that probably the best shot I ever made of it was actually two shots that I double mounted on backer board and joined together in the darkroom. Then, it hit me. I said to myself: "Self, why don't you just do that again with the digital camera and stitch the images together? Well duh! That's just what I intend to do next summer if I can get up there again. Right now, Highway 34 from Loveland to Estes Park is totally closed due to reconstruction from the September flooding of the Big Thompson River. So, if all goes well, once again I will traverse Old Fall River Road and stop at the top with the equipment I now have and flail away.
This image was originally made with Kodachrome film (you DO remember THAT, don't you?) and then totally messed with in the digitizing process. (No electrons were harmed...) The oils were applied after the original photograph had been mutilated for a while and the result is what you see here.
